SPEED Gets 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Release

I came across  Speed on cable the other day. Which means, obviously, that I watched Speed in its entirety the other day. Just like I have a million times before. But pop quiz, hotshot: you realize one of your favorite action movies came out more than 25 years ago. What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO?! You wonder if it’s time to start drinking prune juice and watching CBS procedurals, that’s what you do. But getting old isn’t all bad. When you retire you get a cheap gold watch. Even better, technology improves. And soon we’ll be able to enjoy Speed like never before. The Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock classic is getting its first-ever 4K Ultra HD release.

Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution has announced director Jan de Bont’s 1994 action film is getting a massive upgrade. It’s finally driving into stores with a 4K Ultra HD edition.

In case you’re a yoot that hasn’t seen it, the movie starred the late, great Dennis Hopper as a vengeful explosives expert who terrorized Los Angeles. That included strapping a bomb to a city bus that couldn’t travel slower than 50 miles per hour without blowing up. Of course, that description fails to capture the bonkers, nonstop intensity of the film. To truly appreciate Speed you must watch it. Then watch it again and again and again. It’s somehow both totally ridiculous and genuinely great. And it’s still just as much fun as ever even after all these years.

You can find the list of bonus features for this Ultimate Collector’s edition below. It crashes into stores on May 4. You’ll also be able to pick up an exclusive Steelbook version at Best Buy.

Please, young people, do me and the other “olds” a favor. If, on the small chance, you go to the store to buy your copy, don’t take the parking spots closest to the door. Speed still rocks. But we can’t move as well as we could when it first came out.
