Who should host the Academy Awards next? It seems like every year, a new choice is announced who seems like a fresh idea, and yet when the show is over, everyone decides they were some new variation of not good enough. This year, in an attempt to nip potential controversy in the bud, Kevin Hart resigned after rejecting a demand to apologize for some offensive jokes in his past. And a replacement, as of this writing, has not been figured out.But Saturday Night Live had some ideas last night, in their final new episode of 2018. And while it was basically an excuse for every performer to bust out their favorite impersonation (or two), they made a few choices we could get behind. Matt Damon‘s faux-modest Chris Hemsworth and stoned mystic Matthew McConaughey, to name just a couple, are both picks we could get behind.
Naturally, this is the kind of sketch that allows for some of the regulars to bust out their regular bits, including Chris Redd‘s bellowing Kanye West, and Kate McKinnon‘s Ellen DeGeneres reminding us that once upon a time, everyone’s favorite non-threatening, talk-show hosting comedienne was indeed considered controversial. Better are the newer bits, like Cecily Strong as Rachel Brosnahan, Melissa Villasenor’s spot-on Sarah Silverman, and Pete Davidson just standing there and staring as a Rami Malek impersonation. It’ll be interesting to see if the actual eventual host (or hosts) will come from this same pool. Maybe let Matt Damon do it in character as every other male lead in Hollywood.Image: NBC
