In The Vampire Lestat, an unexpected cameo from a familiar face became a critical source of information. Louis’ dead brother, Paul, returns in The Vampire Lestat finale to help Lestat understand some very important truths about his brother and Louis’ abilities to love and share his love. This profound understanding deeply touches Lestat and helps him to see Louis in a whole new light. The whole scene had us sobbing with its beautiful profundity and filled us with hope for Louis and Lestat’s future together (even though the narrative may not allow it for long). Here’s what Sam Reid shared with Nerdist about what Paul helped Lestat to see about Louis in the final scenes of The Vampire Lestat.
Reid shares, “Lestat’s been pushing Louis to say, “I love you, “or to be more forthcoming. And he also learns from [Louis’ dead brother] Paul, or from his vision of Paul, he understands why Louis cannot be so forthcoming with his love. Because the last person Louis told he loved committed suicide, and he saw that happen. Louis saw that happen. So I think Lestat has a better understanding of Louis now. But yeah, of course, they’re the endgame couple. And going through their trials and tribulations, they’re in a better place now. And it’s a very interesting place to start, if we go on to start another season. Because now I think they are probably as together as they’re ever going to be. But what makes a good TV show is what keeps them apart from one another.”
What a beautiful sentiment from Reid. Paul’s death is a heavy grief that forever weighs on Louis in Interview with the Vampire/The Vampire Lestat. And though Paul, Louis, and Lestat did not truly get along while all three of them were alive, Paul’s blessing in death is truly meaningful. And if his words can help guide Louis and Lestat together in life now, then the three of them can achieve a strong healing that transcends life and death; a beautiful vision of the connection between family.
In the meantime, we’ll enjoy Lestat and Louis as together as they’re going to be… And hold on tight for what’s to come.
