Deadpool & Wolverine featured a scene that was just as intriguing as it was hilarious. It offered a glimpse into an unlikely event that hasn’t happened yet. Maybe. Wade Wilson saw something he wasn’t supposed to have seen while looking at the TVA’s monitors. In the “distant future” Thor will weep while holding the Merc With a Mouth’s grievously injured body. Why? How? And, seriously, why? No one knows! But Ryan Reynolds says we will someday. He promises the MCU will eventually payoff that notorious moment. He just isn’t saying when.
While Reynolds was walking the red carpet for his new film Mayday, he told Entertainment Weekly (in an interview we first learned about at IGN) that Marvel Studios will explain that peak into the future Deadpool saw at the TVA. “Don’t we all want to know why? Why? Why was Thor crying?” he said when asked about that encounter. “I want to know too. We will find out at some point. And I’m excited for people to find out.”
Could we find out in Avengers: Doomsday? It will star both Chris Hemsworth and Ryan Reynolds? Or could that moment happen in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars? Yes, we could. Sure. We might also find out in some silly end-credits scene during Deadpool 4: Yeah He Actually Did Survive Battleworld. It’s not like that moment in Deapool & Wolverine came with some clear parameters. It was a really funny gag and easily could have stayed that way forever. Just as Marvel can easily turn it into a real moment of drama if it wants.
Either/or. Maybe something in-between, too. If we had to bet, based on the solemnity of the Avengers: Doomsday trailers thus far, the answer is more than a year away. Thor doesn’t even know who Deadpool is just yet. It’s hard to imagine the God of Thunder sobbing over a foul-mouthed Merc from another dimension until he at least finds out why everyone likes him. Only then will we likely find out why he’s going to cry over him.
