One of our most anticipated movies of the rest of 2026 is Zach Cregger’s survival horror adaptation of Resident Evil. We have seen the first third of the movie, but we need to see it all! Watching Austin Abrams mutter to himself while trying not to die in a T-virus apocalypse is legitimately all we want for a spooky good time. For now, we just have to make do with a new extended clip which has Abrams’ Bryan running through a street in Raccoon City as zombies try to dive bomb him.
This particular scene is the one, as Cregger explained, nearly killed the lead actor. During the Comic-Con panel for the movie, the filmmaker explained that he didn’t want to rely on CGI for the bodies falling. So instead, the SFX team rigged up falling “blood bags” which would explode when hitting the ground. They weighed 150 pounds apiece. During the above running scene, one of the prop bags almost landed on Abrams’ head.
Cregger said, “It would’ve killed him. If he had been one step to the right, he would’ve died. [The shot is] in the movie, so it’s f*cking worth it. I was pretty stunned. … That’s what’s so great about making movies is you have this scene, you have this amazing idea in your head, and then you just have all these people help you realize that idea and immortalize it on the screen. And there’s a real sense of teamwork and accomplishment. I’m very proud of this movie. I feel like I grew a lot making it, just as a filmmaker.”
Abrams is about to be the king of the “Unlucky Bastard” heroes in movies, with both Resident Evil and Whalefall about to debut. I don’t know which I’d like less, zombies trying to eat me or a whale actively eating me. Neither sound all that fun. But what does sound fun is seeing Resident Evil when it hits theaters September 18.
