PROJECT HAIL MARY Writer Shares His STAR WARS x STAR TREK Idea

We’ve had Marvel and DC crossover, not to mention Godzilla vs. Kong and Freddy vs. Jason. But one major pop culture crossover that has never happened, somehow, is Star Wars x Star Trek. This is likely because their universes are so different, despite both having the word “star” up front. But one creator who has thought long and hard about what a Star Wars/Star Trek crossover would look like is sci-fi author Andy Weir, who wrote the books Project Hail Mary and The Martian. And his proposed story would have united the events of A New Hope and the most beloved Star Trek film, The Wrath of Khan. Here’s what he told Inverse about his wild idea:

The idea is that the Genesis device going off at the end of The Wrath of Khan rips a hole in the fabric of reality. And so did, too, the Death Star exploding in A New Hope. It becomes the Yavin/Mutara wormhole. Then I imagine the Enterprise goes there, and so from that point forward, the stories diverge from canon. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader end up on the Star Trek side of that wormhole because the Death Star blew up and they’re in their ships, both of them.

And the Enterprise picks up Vader. And they’re like: “This guy is f*cked up. He’s got these cybernetic implants.” And so they completely repair his body, which McCoy does in sickbay. And then he’s back to Anakin. And when the Enterprise goes to the Star Wars universe, Spock is dead, because it’s the end of The Wrath of Khan, but then Spock becomes a Force ghost. And Sulu has inherent Jedi abilities which manifest once he goes there.

Nerdist’s Take: This Idea Should Never Be a Movie or TV Show, But It Would Be a Fun One-Off Comic

Is this premise kookie as heck? Yes. Should it ever be a movie or TV show? We’re gonna say no. However, it would make for a very fun comic book series. If there can be a Star Wars and Marvel crossover, we don’t see why this couldn’t be a comic book. It’s not like it would be actual canon. But we think both Lucasfilm and Paramount might still be hesitant to make this a reality. But in a world where we’ve had Star Trek x Planet of the Apes, and Batman meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this isn’t that much crazier. And based on art he’s posted, you just know legendary artist Alex Ross is probably dying to illustrate it.
