James Gunn Explains the PEACEMAKER Finale’s Wild DC Cameos

In case you haven’t been watching Peacemaker on HBO Max, you have missed out on maybe the best DC series ever. James Gunn, John Cena, and all involved have knocked it out of the park. They made an incredible show based around a character that fans either didn’t know or hated in The Suicide Squad. Although technically set in the DCEU, no one was expecting to see the huge DC cameos we got in the Peacemaker finale.

After Peacemaker and crew kill the cosmic cow responsible for feeding the butterfly aliens (this sentence makes more sense if you’ve seen the show), the Justice League shows up. Just a wee bit late to the party. We see Superman and Wonder Woman in silhouette. But Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Flash (Ezra Miller) actually exchange some funny lines together. So how on Earth did Gunn get those cameos? Speaking to Variety, Gunn spilled the tea on how it all went down—and the coincidental Marvel connection.

“I just wrote it and gave them the scripts,” Gunn said. “I don’t think they really realized what they had agreed to until they saw what I had shot. Which was the Justice League there. And then I think the full weight of it and what does this mean for the DCU and all of that became huge pieces of conversation. Up to the very highest levels of Warner’s. And to their credit, they let me get away with it.” Considering the scene has some very adult language, it is indeed shocking they let Gunn go there.

Gunn added there was never any real discussion about having Gal Gadot and Henry Cavill reprise their roles as Wonder Woman and Superman. Jason Momoa agreed once Gunn told him the show included several jokes about Aquaman’s carnal relations with sea life. But once he found out Ezra Miller was a big fan of his, he got his involvement as well. And just like that, we had two iconic heroes on board. And once classic line from Aquaman: “F*#k you, Barry.”

Interestingly enough, the Marvel Studios crew actually shot the Flash scene. This happened while working on Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. That’s probably as close to a Marvel/DC crossover as we’re seeing any time soon. But it sure made us want a Gunn Justice League project in the future. Maybe in the vein of the comedic Justice League International comics from the ’90s? Those comics are very in Gunn’s wheelhouse. Fingers crossed that’s James Gunn’s future mystery project for HBO Max. But let’s be real. We’re excited for any DC projects coming from James Gunn.
