The Original E.T. Animatronic Figure Is Up for Auction

He’s quite possibly the most famous alien in cinema history, even forty years after his debut. We’re talking about E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the titular star of Steven Spielberg’s all-time classic film. And now, if you have a few dimes to spare, the screen-used animatronic figure of E.T. can be yours to own through an auction. And when we say a few dimes, we mean about $2 to $3 million dollars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, TCM and Julien’s Auctions are giving fans the chance to own the original E.T. model. This will happen at the upcoming “Icons & Idols: Hollywood” auction event. It takes place live on Dec. 17-18 in Beverly Hills, and online at JuliensLive.com. (Although as you can see in the image below, he’s a little terrifying in his current state).

The executive director of Julien’s had this to say about the auction in a statement:

“We could not be more honored than to work with the family of Carlo Rambaldi, caretakers of one of the most incredible pop culture figures in the history of Hollywood — E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” Rambaldi was a pioneer in the field, and his artistry brought unreal characters to life in a way that has never been replicated with modern-day visual effects.”

Rambaldi won the visual effects Oscar for E.T., an award that he shared with Dennis Muren and Kenneth Smith. And the effects absolutely still hold up today. We’re not sure we could say the same if E.T. had been a CGI creation. The E.T. model isn’t the only big piece of Hollywood history going up for sale at this auction. Other items include Moses’ staff from The Ten Commandments, Robert De Niro’s boxing gloves from Raging Bull, and the Nimbus 2000 from the first Harry Potter.

Other props up for auction include some from films such as TitanicThe Phantom MenaceAlien, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Several dresses worn by Marilyn Monroe are also part of this incredible auction. But we’d say the E.T. model is definitely the crown jewel here. For more information, head on over to JuliensLive.com.
