These Rad Nike Shoes Are Inspired By Gamer Culture

Nike makes all kinds of pop culture-inspired shoes. But this upcoming releases finds the footwear giant embracing the aesthetics of video games. This fall, Nike will release a brand new shoe that evokes the colors and graphics of the 8-bit world, with a new Blazer Mid sneaker that’s inspired by video gaming culture.

Fans have been sharing images of the upcoming Blazer Mid ’77 shoe on social media. It sports a white/white/bright crimson/black color scheme, and premium patent leather overlays which serve as the mudguard and toe cap. This new shoe exhibits a ton of details that the nerdier fan will notice straight away. For starters, it comes with a “have a good game” print across the lower heels, a pixelated 8-bit style Nike Swoosh logo, retro style Velcro heel patches, a multicolored sole, and an all-over glow-in-the-dark branding treatment for the “Just Do It” logos.

Based on the images alone, it seems that so far, fans seem to mostly dig ’em. With some reservations of course. A Twitter user named Chris Macchi said, “I actually don’t hate these, but they’re a bit too overboard. The lights-out bit is SICK and I love the pixel swoosh.”

This isn’t the first time Nike has embraced video games or gaming culture when creating a new line of shoes. Last year, they released Nintendo 64-inspired Air Max 97s. There have also been several Sony Playstation collaborations over the past few years.  While these latest shoes bring to mind the graphics of video games, the colors also make them perfect for fans of anime—and even just ravers.

These shoes don’t have an actual release date quite yet, or even a suggested retail price. Right now however, all signs point to this colorful shoe arriving in stores in the fall of 2020.
