There would be no Avengers without Nick Fury. From the moment Samuel L. Jackson unexpectedly showed up in Iron Man‘s post-credits, the ultimate spy has been the glue that holds Earth’s mightiest heroes together. He’s been such an integral part of the franchise that it’s hard to imagine it without him. But we might have to after the official trailer for Secret Invasion. Because Nick Fury is returning for “one last fight” in the Disney+ series. Unfortunately, “the end is closer than we think.”
There’s been a lot of talk about “MCU fatigue” lately. We doubt we’ll hear much of that after this intense, fantastic trailer for Secret Invasion. Nick Fury’s old friends have splintered, and now a Skrull invasion threatens everything he has ever worked for. Here’s the official synopsis for the Marvel show:
In Marvel Studios’ new series “Secret Invasion,” set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.
From old faces to new, we’re not sure who Fury can truly trust in this global war. We do know who will join Jackson on Secret Invasion, though, and we see some of these characters in the trailer. The show, directed by Ali Selim, stars: Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.
We recently learned who the MCU’s newcomers are playing, including that Clarke’s character first appeared as a child in Captain Marvel. She is Talos’s daughter. But the one character we really can’t figure out yet is Coleman’s MI6 agent. Whether human or Skrull, she seems like trouble. We can’t wait to find out what kind of trouble she is in exactly after the Secret Invasion trailer. And now we know for sure when we will. The six-episode espionage series comes to Disney+ on June 21.
Be careful who you watch Secret Invasion with, though. If Nick Fury doesn’t know who he can trust, how can you? And if this really is the end for one of the MCU’s most important characters, you’ll want to be surrounded by your actual friends when we say goodbye to him. (Well, “goodbye” until we find out he simply faked his own death again.
