LEGO’s Super Mario Mario & Yoshi Set Homages Super Mario World with Pixelated Art and Actual Animation Effects
The universal truth of LEGO sets is that no matter how beautiful they are, there’s always more excitement hidden between their bricks. LEGO’s Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi 2D build is absolutely no different. Although its first-look images alone have us craving the set, the coolest parts of it lie in its clever design.
First, Super Mario fans will recognize how this Mario & Yoshi LEGO set’s pixelated aesthetic nostalgically mirrors visuals from Super Mario‘s earliest games. Super Mario World first released in 1990. Gaming graphics looked a little different back then. We’re obsessed with the way LEGO has manipulated its bricks in order to harken back to the game’s original style. Of course, Super Mario World was also a 2D game. And so LEGO has taken it upon itself to make this 3D build look 2D for the occasion. Mamma mia! We love it.
Second, this Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi LEGO set comes with a set of practical animations. Yes, once you build Mario and Yoshi out of LEGO bricks, you’ll be able to see Yoshi run with Caped Mario riding on his back. Additionally, Yoshi’s tongue can pop in and out, just like it does in Super Mario World. LEGO shares that this Mario & Yoshi set is built in multiple layers, allowing for its practical animations to function.
Carl Merriam, a Senior Designer on LEGO Super Mario, explains: “In this model, we wanted to capture the original sprite animation from Super Mario World. This meant re-creating the pixel art in LEGO bricks and then adding a mechanism to make Yoshi run with Caped Mario riding on his back. AND if that wasn’t enough fun, we also added a dial to make Yoshi’s tongue pop in and out – just like in the game!”

LEGO will display Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi starting on Thursday, July 25.
LEGO will have a truly inspired space-themed presence at the convention. But the message of LEGO’s SDCC booth extends beyond literal space travel. Instead, LEGO brings with it an overall spirit of discovery and exploration. Anyone who visits LEGO’s booth (#2829) will be able to journey into orbit, but can also visit many other faraway worlds, including that of Super Mario. And if pictures of this new Mario & Yoshi set are anything to judge by, seeing this build in person will be a true treat.
