BATTLETOADS Returns in August on Xbox Game Pass and Steam

Rare’s beloved side-scrolling beat-’em-up Battletoads finally returns this August. Developed by Dlala Studios, Rare first announced the game during Xbox’s 2018 E3 briefing. Then, they set a 2019 release date for the game. The original Battletoads launched in 1991. Later in 2015, Rare Replay anthology included the title alongside other Rare hits, like Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark. The most recent game in the series, Battletoads Arcade, landed 26 years ago, in 1994.

“The tenacity and split-second reflexes required to beat the original Battletoads has given it a fearsome reputation among fans,” Rare said in a new blog post at Xbox Wire. Paying tribute to the wild cartoons of the 1990s and featuring the return of classic characters, this new Battletoads also looks to appeal to a wider audience than ever before.

“Dlala’s new approach,” the licensor explained, “focuses on maintaining this mayhem while ensuring you have enough options to play at your own pace. That includes bringing in some buddies for couch co-op, which allows up to three players to drop in and out at will, along with difficulty settings designed to suit everyone from Tadpole to Battletoad. Just like before, you’ll be faced with hugely varied challenges as you play, including new vehicle sections and even some puzzle-solving this time around.”

Previously, Dlala Studios has worked on Sea of Thieves, The Escapists, and projects for clients like Disney. Rare promises an animated story penned by award-winning writers. The new game features voice-over talent bringing these classic characters—including Zitz, Rash, and Pimple—back to life for a new generation. The game will be available to pre-install on Xbox and PC for Game Pass subscribers sometime in the immediate future.

Battletoads is set to hit Game Pass for Xbox and PC, as well as Steam, on August 20. Get ready to soak in the nostalgic feelings.
