We’re just 53 days away from Black Widow, a.k.a. the first solo film for Marvel’s super spy assassin Natasha Romanoff. And with the dwindling of days until the movie’s release comes a brand new trailer, filled with exciting new looks into what the movie promises to be as well as a highlight on Yelena Belova, Taskmaster, and the Red Room.
“Before I was an Avenger, I made mistakes… and a lot of enemies,” Natasha tells us in a voiceover. One of those enemies is Taskmaster—the film’s main antagonist, and as we learn in this trailer, the person who is apparently controlling the Red Room and manipulating other Widows. We’ve seen Natasha fighting some Red Room spies in previous trailers and there’s more of that in this one. It now makes sense why they might be trying to go after one of their own.
As with most Marvel movies, the overall plot of Black Widow has been shrouded in secrecy for the past few months, with each trailer giving us mostly the same scenes and information in different ways. The final trailer for the film seems to pull the curtain back a bit, with this reveal implying a large part of the movie—if not the main mission of the movie—will most likely be Natasha teaming up with Yelena and the rest of her Russian family to defeat Taskmaster and save the other Widows who are currently still under Taskmaster’s hold.
In other words: Natasha’s got one more stroke of red to wipe out from her ledger, and she’s done running from her past.

While this is obviously Natasha’s movie, the trailer and new scenes place a very clear emphasis on the bond and connection between Yelena and Natasha, from their fighting to their sisterly team-up to their casual moments. Natasha tells her sister “I should’ve gone back for you,” a quote which plays over a shot of Yelena lying on a table and a syringe, and we’re left to wonder just what happened between the two sisters after Natasha apparently escaped the Red Room’s hold. Did Yelena get her “graduation ceremony” like we saw Natasha get in Age of Ultron? Or was she perhaps exposed to something more sinister during her time there? If the movie decides to take any cues from the Black Widow comics, there’s certainly a bunch of theories we can draw from. Also, we know that the Red Room experimented on its recruits. It’s possible that during her time there, Yelena underwent experiments—possibly experiments that gave her some sort of skills or powers.

The new trailer also gives us another quick look at a young General Ross, signifying that there may be more flashbacks than anything we might see of Natasha and Yelena’s childhood. It also might mean that Natasha has been on Ross’s radar for longer than she’s actually been wanted by him following the events of Captain America: Civil War. It still remains to be seen how or if he’ll fit into the movie, but we expect that his inclusion will have some significance given that there’s the possibility we could be getting the Thunderbolts team at some point down the line.
“We have to go back to where it all started. So they never do that to anyone again,” Natasha says firmly as she prepares to fight.
Forget Vormir—this might be Natasha’s most personal mission yet.
Black Widow hits theaters on May 1.
