This summer’s movie schedule is unlike any other in recent times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is usually a slate of blockbuster films to keep fans in their local theaters with snacks and drinks in hand. Movie theater chains like AMC and Regal are opening back up in a few weeks, but a lot of people are understandably wary of going back into a traditional theater any time soon. Amazon Studios/Prime Video and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society are teaming up to offer an alternative with “A Night at the Drive-In,” a summer screening schedule celebrating diverse films.
The series will kick off on July 1 with a slate of previously released movies to celebrate love, pride, laughter, and stories that will inspire and enlighten viewers. “A Night at the Drive-In” will feature two movies each week through the end of August at select drive-in theaters. Fans will be able to enjoy a few popular flicks in a social-distancing approved environment along with snacks from Black/brown-owned businesses Path Water, Pipcorn Popcorn, and Partake Cookies. It’s a great way to bring people together, uplift representation on screen, and support businesses with owners from marginalized communities.
Amazon Studios released a video featuring Michael B. Jordan breaking down the partnership and inviting fans to join in each week. He also pokes fun at his beard and Afro by saying it’s obvious he has been in quarantine.

Jordan made a further statement about why “A Night at the Drive-In” matters in a joint press release with Amazon Studios.
“With this drive-in summer series, I hope that friends and families are able to not only enjoy, but to learn and grow. Now more than ever, amplifying Black and Brown stories means engaging culture to speak to hearts and minds about the world we live in. As we use this opportunity to reimagine community and proximity, I am excited that these films will be shared and celebrated all across the country.”
