MATCHBOX THE MOVIE’s First Trailer Races To Find a Nuclear Warhead

Barbie‘s box office success guaranteed a slew of movies based on iconic toys were sure to follow. Now one of the first is ready to race into theaters. Matchbox: The Movie starring John Cena is bringing those little replica cars to life. But it’s first trailer, released during a panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, doesn’t look anything like Barbie. It looks a lot more like a Fast & Furious spinoff.

To be specific, this action-comedy looks like a Fast & Furious movie shot inside of a Mission: Impossible with Matchbox cars serving as a (very loose) bridge. The film’s official synopsis matches the vibes of this trailer. Here’s how Apple Original Films, Skydance Media, and Mattel Studios describe it:

Inspired by the iconic Mattel toys, Matchbox The Movie is an action-packed, globetrotting adventure about a group of friends since childhood who have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean (Cena), their long-absent former leader, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world.

If you’re already creating your own head canon that says Dom Toretto’s brother Jakob, also played by John Cena, faked his death so he could return to his secret life as decoy member of the “matchbox kids” just know you weren’t the first. We saw this trailer before you so we were the first.

Obviously that won’t be true, but still……but still.

Matchbox The Movie comes from director Sam Hargrave (Extraction franchise). David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) penned the script. It also stars Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp. Despite those big names it’s not heading to theaters. The action-comedy will race it’s way straight to streaming when it debuts at Apple TV on October 9.
