One of the DC Studios projects we’re most excited for is the upcoming CGI animation/puppetry hybrid film Dynamic Duo, which focuses on Batman’s first two Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. And it’s a project we still know very little about, aside from its director being Arthur Mintz, and its 2028 release date. We know that the film won’t tie into the greater DCU, unlike animated series like Creature Commandos, and will be its own thing. But now, we learned who will play the original Boy Wonder, Dick Grayson, in the film. And it’s 19-year-old The Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon star, Mason Thames. We learned the casting news via Collider.

The confirmation came from DC Studios co-head Peter Safran. He said that Thames is a massive DC Comics fan. In particular, he’s a big Nightwing fan. As comic book fans know, Grayson was Robin before he graduated to the role of Nightwing. Safran said in an interview, “Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did.” Safran added that Thames came in and “Auditioned the s*** out of it. He’s a wonderful young actor. But boy, did he want this. He was just obsessed. When he came over to the DC offices, he came over with his dad at the time, and we’ve got tons of great archives and stuff in there, and he wanted to take a picture of everything and with everything. He’s a fan.”
Nerdist’s Take: While Dynamic Duo Won’t Be Set in the DCU, It’s Not Impossible for These Actors to Reprise Their Roles in Live-Action
Dynamic Duo already has cast its Jason Todd, with Ghostbusters: Afterlife star Logan Kim. The last two actors to play Dick and Jason were Brenton Thwaites and Curran Walters in Titans on HBO Max. The big question on everyone’s minds, of course, is whether or not either actor will play their characters in live-action. Rumors suggest Batman: Brave and the Bold features Dick Grayson in some capacity. So far, however, everything we’ve read suggests that Dynamic Duo won’t connect at all to the DCU, so we think it’s unlikely. But if audiences respond to both performances? Then we’d say nothing is out of the question. Dynamic Duo hits theaters in September 2028.
