Katee Sackhoff to Play Bo-Katan in THE MANDALORIAN

Season two of Disney+‘s The Mandalorian is shaping up to basically be a continuation of both The Clone Wars and Rebels at this point. First we learned that Ahsoka Tano will join, probably with Rosario Dawson in the role. Last week, we learned that Temuera Morrison will appear as Boba Fett (and probably Captain Rex too). Now we learn, via SlashFilm, that Katee Sackhoff will appear as Mandalorian terrorist-turned-leader Bo-Katan Kryze. What’s extra cool about this is that Sackhoff has played the character on both The Clone Wars and Rebels.

Katee Sackhoff will play the live-action version of Bo-Katan in The Mandalorian.

SlashFilm confirmed that Sackhoff filmed her role for the second season of the wildly popular Star Wars series in February, completing work on the show before the global shutdown. Pandemic, innit? Sackhoff is, of course, best known for portraying Kara “Starbuck” Thrace on Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica. She has since gone on to roles in Longmire, The Flash, and most recently Netflix’s Another Life.

Bo-Katan first appeared in season four of The Clone Wars in the episode “A Friend in Need”; she later reappeared for a major arc in season five. Bo-Katan was a member of the Mandalorian terrorist group, the Death Watch. She and Death Watch leader Pre Vizla team up with a newly resurfaced Maul to overthrow the pacificst government of Mandalore. In the course of events, Maul kills both Vizla and Satine Kryze, the Duchess of Mandalore, Bo-Katan’s sister, and Obi-Wan’s beloved. So, bad times, really.

Lucasfilm

As we recently saw in season seven of The Clone Wars, Bo-Katan contacts Ahsoka Tano to help retake Mandalore from the clutches of Gar Saxon and Maul. Which they do. Bo-Katan returns in season four of Rebels in a storyline involving Mandalore again. Young Mandalorian Sabine Wren returns to her home with the Darksaber, the powerful weapon and symbol of the true leadership of Mandalore. However, instead of taking her rightful place as Mand’alor, she hands the Darksaber over to Bo-Katan to rule in her stead.

Given how season one of The Mandalorian ended—not only have the Mandalorians all scattered to the edges of the galaxy, but the Darksaber is in the hands of Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito)—fans wondered if Bo-Katan was killed at some point or if Gideon merely stole the Darksaber from her. Bo-Katan could very well appear in flashback only, but we’d love to see her in exile and team up with our heroic bounty hunter to take down Gideon.

Giancarlo Esposito's Moff Gideon emerges from his wrecked TIE Fighter with the fabled Darksaber in The Mandalorian.

However Bo-Katan appears, it’s great to know Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are committed to continuity even across media. While it’s sadly unlikely for a lot of the voice actors to play their character in live-action, Sackhoff is perfect casting for Bo-Katan, in animation or otherwise.

The Mandalorian season two will likely hit Disney+ this October.
