Perhaps one of the most bizarre yet hilarious memes to arise in recent years is the Facebook events meme. From “Windex the Bean” to “Repairing the San Andreas Fault With Ramen,” thousands of Facebook users have RSVPd to these joke events for fun. Perhaps more bizarre than the events themselves is the recent coverage one event garnered. Or perhaps the fact that musician Lil Nas X made a meme-ified music video about it (we first saw via Polygon).
Nationwide, news outlets are talking about the popular Facebook event “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us.” USA Today even went so far as to talk to Air Force officials about a potential raid and security measures. The natural response of those wanting to “see them aliens” to this recent news coverage was to..well, make more memes of it.
Lil Nas X, the artist behind “Old Town Road,” decided to hop on the bandwagon of Area 51 memes. His latest remix music video, animaed by Somehoodlum, features him and others storming the supposed Alien camp. Considering how much Lil Nas X loves and participates in meme culture, this isn’t that surprising. The artist isn’t afraid to poke fun at himself, and we’re glad he’s blending his own jokes in with this meme phenomenon.
Now, there’s a lot to unpack here in this video. Besides obviously featuring the storming of Area 51, the music video features many other meme icons. A mutated Thanos bird can be seen perched in the Nevadan desert, as well as the Infinity Gauntlet. Lil Nas X and the crew approach on horseback, led into battle by…Keanu Reeves Naruto running. Taking a bite out of a panini—based on his other chart-climbing song—Lil Nas X leads the stormers into a spaceship, where the aliens and humans make peace.
If anyone actually storms Area 51, “Old Town Road” will most definitely be the battle anthem. Until then, we’ll be watching this video on repeat as we wait for our alien brothers to be freed.
