LEGO 2K DRIVE Brings MARIO KART-Like Racing to an Open-World

Do you love racing games but have grown tired of Mario Kart‘s blue shells and finite courses? Now you have another option to fill your digital need for speed. LEGO 2k Drive is an open-world game that lets you both race and explore while zipping around in your custom built vehicles. And its trailers show why it’s still different from the franchise that inspired it.

LEGO 2K Drive looks to build off the enduring fun of Mario Kart, and we mean that as a compliment. This new release from Take-Two Interactive and Visual Concepts gives gamers a chance to drive anywhere they want. It takes place in the “massive open-world” of Bricklandia. Here’s the game’s official synopsis from Nintendo’s listing:

Race anywhere, play with anyone, build your dream rides, and defeat a cast of wild racing rivals for the coveted Sky Trophy! In LEGO 2K Drive, your awesome transforming vehicle gives you the freedom to speed seamlessly across riveting racetracks, off-road terrain, and open waters. Explore the vast world of Bricklandia, show off your driving skills, and build vehicles brick-by-brick!”

LEGO 2K Drive features a Story mode where you compete for the Sky Trophy. That lets you go from rookie to champion as you face-off in a series of contests with “charismatic” mini-figure rivals. And every time you win you’ll get closer to facing off with “the infamous Shadow Z.”

If you’re looking for something less structured you can also enjoy the game’s Open-World Exploration format. That allows you to zoom around Bricklandia meeting “colorful characters” and going on “kooky quests.” Or instead you can just enjoy the many sights and sounds of the “vast and vibrant” land.

Otherwise head to your garage to make your own custom vehicles. From cars to boats, you’ll construct your own creations from scratch in the grand LEGO tradition. You’ll then be able to also race them against your friends, both at home and online.

LEGO 2K Drive is currently available in three editions. Prices range from $59.99 for the basic game up to $99.99 for the “Awesome” version and $119.99 for the “Awesome Rivals” edition. You can get your copy, digital or physical, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Just do us one favor, though, okay? Don’t build any blue shells. We don’t mind losing any race in any digital worlds so long as its not because of a blue shell.
