HBO Max’s New SDCC LANTERNS Trailer Shines Brightly

Although DC Studios didn’t host a dedicated panel on its own, they held a panel at Comic-Con showcasing their new HBO Max series Lanterns, about two of Earth’s most iconic Green Lanterns heroes, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Character actor Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) plays Hal as an older, grizzled veteran Green Lantern, with Aaron Pierre as Hal’s gifted rookie trainee, John Stewart. At the Lanterns panel, HBO Max dropped a new trailer for the series, which shows the emerald warriors trying to unravel a mystery in the American heartland. And this mystery involves the Manhunters. You can watch the new Lanterns trailer down below:

The first trailers has a definite lack of the color green, which is rather odd. Which seemed rather odd for a show based on DC’s Green Lantern franchise. But this newest trailer shows both men wield their power rings to create constructs, something fans had complained about not seeing in the previous teasers and trailers. The newest trailer showcases a far more Earthbound setting than most modern Green Lantern comics. But let’s remember that for many years, most Green Lantern stories had the cosmic hero fighting villains on Earth. Having the Lanterns mostly confined to Earth for an adventure is nothing new.

Still, Earthbound or not, expect to see many familiar Green Lantern elements in the series. We already know the alien chipmunk Ch’p receives a mention in this series. And also that the fallen Lantern Sinestro will also feature in some capacity. And many longtime Green Lantern fans remain convinced that the Red Lantern Atrocitus, is secretly a part of this series. Based on the trailer, a more sci-fi version of True Detective is what fans should expect from this series. And we must say, it certainly looks intriguing to us. DC StudiosLanterns‘ officially drops episode one on HBO Max on August 16.
