Nearly twenty years after she brought the U.S.S. Voyager home from the distant Delta Quadrant, Captain Kathryn Janeway is back. As revealed at a virtual New York Comic Con panel, Kate Mulgrew will return to voice Janeway for the new Nickelodeon animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. This new CGI animated show, announced a few months ago, follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship, and use it to “search for adventure, meaning and salvation.”
Mulgrew said in the press release, “I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”
Prodigy executive producer Alex Kurtzman added “Captain Janeway was held to a different standard than her predecessors. She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough’ by the doubters, but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers on Nickelodeon, than she.”
With Prodigy premiering in 2021, it will see Mulgrew’s return to the character exactly 20 years since Star Trek: Voyager ended. Her character had a brief cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis, consulting Captain Picard as the newly promoted Admiral Janeway. We don’t think Janeway still has a desk job on this new series though. Especially with Mulgrew suggesting Janeway is “at the helm” once more. Hopefully, we see some other faces from her Voyager days show up as well.
