Jemaine Clement is Joining the AVATAR Sequels

If we’re going to get Avatar sequels until the end of time itself, and based on the number of them currently planned and how far into the future Disney has scheduled them to arrive in theaters we are, we hope they make them good. We know they movies will look amazing, but like any trip we hope our return to Pandora involves a lot fellow travelers we love spending time with. That’s why the latest news from the film might be the most excited we’ve been about saying “present” when the first sequel arrives, because Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement is joining the franchise in a new role.

The official Avatar twitter account made the announcement that Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Legion, Moana) has signed on to play Dr. Garvin, a marine biologist who works on Pandora, which should put him right in the middle of the action.

What’s interesting here is they’ve said he’s signed on to the “sequels,” as opposed to just Avatar 2: Pandora Boogaloo*, which means Clement could be in for the long haul. It might be an important part immediately, one we hope combines both his comedic sensibilities with his dramatic work. But even if his marine biologist doesn’t have a major role this time, there’s certainly time for it to grow into one.

And if we’re going to spend the rest of our lives talking about Avatar sequels they’ll still be making long after most of us have shuffled off our mortal coils here on Earth, we’re glad to spend all that time with one of our favorite performers. It’s a long trip to Pandora.

Avatar 2 is scheduled for release December 2021.
