Jamie Campbell Bower Plays Celeborn in THE RINGS OF POWER

There were many whispers floating in the air when Jamie Campbell Bower was announced to play a role in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season three. Of course, in Stranger Things, Bower played the nefarious Vecna/Henry/One to perfection. But looking at the waify, blonde actor, it’s clear that Jamie Campbell Bower was born to play a Lord of the Rings elf. And now, the whispers have proven true. As we predicted in our notorious featured image at the time of Bower’s announcement, Jamie Campbell Bower will indeed play Celeborn, Galadriel’s missing husband in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season three.

Who Is Celeborn, Jamie Campbell Bower’s Character, in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power?

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Jamie Campbell Bower will play Celeborn, Galadriel’s husband. Die-hard fans will know, but casual fans may need to be reminded that Galadriel is actually already married in The Rings of Power. She got married long before the War of Wrath between the Elves, Sauron, and Morgoth broke out in full during the First Age of Middle-earth. That is, Galadriel married Jamie Campbell Bower’s Celeborn and Galadriel married in a time of relative peace, but their bliss was quickly interrupted by war.

Celeborn is a figure we haven’t seen full in any The Lord of the Rings adaptations. He appeared briefly in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movies, but mostly hovered by Galadriel’s side, asked after Gandalf, and did what elves do best: looked weary and imperious. We’ll be excited to see Bower’s take on Celeborn in The Rings of Power and learn more about the kind of elf the fierce Galadriel has chosen as her companion.

According to Bower, via Empire, this version of Celeborn is a “lover-boy” figure. “This idea of longing and yearning is so pervasive in Tolkien’s relationship with [his wife] Edith for the time that they were apart,” says Bower. “I really feasted on that idea. Celeborn has had to find a way to survive whilst longing for something that he so dearly loved and so dearly missed as well.” And Morfydd Clark was more than game to contribute to the pair’s sparkling interplay. “She’s kind of rude to him in the books,” she chuckles. “She’s the queen! But Jamie looks exactly like how I would imagine Celeborn. He’s such an Elf.”

Where Has Galadriel’s Husband Been?

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season three, Galadriel reveals the following about Celeborn, her husband. She shares of Jamie Campbell Bower’s character, “Celeborn was his name,” She tells Theo after the explosion of Mount Doom, “We met in a glade of flowers. I was dancing, and he saw me there. The war seemed so very far away then. When he went to it, I chided him; his armor didn’t fit properly. I called him a silver clam. I never saw him again after that.”

We don’t know exactly what became of Celeborn after he left Galadriel to go to war. In previous articles, we opined that “Potentially Celeborn is a prisoner of Sauron, or the orcs, or simply stranded somewhere. Either way, we expect to learn more about Celeborn as The Rings of Power unfolds.”

Here’s hoping Bower’s Celeborn comes back to make Morfydd Clarke’s Galadriel laugh and smile again soon in The Rings of Power season three.

Celeborn and Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings Lore

Ultimately, Tolkien doesn’t write the Second Age story of Galadriel and Celeborn in great detail in his texts, leaving space for The Rings of Power to develop the tale. In broad strokes, we know that like in The Rings of Power, Galadriel and Celeborn met in a time of peace in the elven realm of Doriath in the First Age. When the War of Wrath saw their home destroyed, they moved to Middle-earth. The pair married early in the Second Age after the fall of Morgoth. Galadriel and Celeborn then settled in Eregion, the elven realm of Smiths. They were suspicious of Sauron when he appeared, but their suspicions went unheeded.

Eventually, Galadriel and Celeborn join the fight against Sauron, working with other familiar elves such as Elrond. They have children, twins Elladan and Elrohir, and a daughter, Celebrían, who (spoiler alert) marries Elrond. Galadriel has not yet had children on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Eventually, Celeborn and Galadriel become the Lord and Lady of Lothlórien, an elven woodland realm. They aid the Fellowship of the Ring in their quest to destroy the One Ring. In time, Galadriel goes west to Valinor, leaving Middle-earth behind. She and Celeborn part. For Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and Jamie Campbell Bower’s Celeborn in The Rings of Power, this will be a second parting. Eventually, Celeborn, too, leaves to join her, and “with him went the last living memory of the Elder Days in Middle-earth,” according to The Lord of the Rings.

Celeborn has some lore-beef with dwarves, but we’ll see if that will fit into the story of Jamie Campbell Bower’s version at all in The Rings of Power season three. We like Durin, so we hope everyone can get along.

What Will Sauron Think About Jamie Campbell Bower’s Celeborn Arriving in The Rings of Power Season 3?

But let’s ask the real questions. What will Sauron think of Galadriel’s HUSBAND coming back onto the scene? Galadriel and Sauron aren’t romantically entwined in the traditional sense, but Sauron did basically propose marriage to her in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season one. And he seemed exceptionally angry that she refused to be his Queen and help him rule Middle-earth. The pair has shared some emotional scenes throughout the series. Galadriel even confessed that she had never felt kinship like the one she shared with Sauron’s human form, Halbrand. And even though on Galadriel’s part, her mind is CLOSED to Sauron, Sauron is a prideful, angry creature. He probably won’t appreciate someone else taking an intiamate connection that he feels should be his.

We don’t know yet if Jamie Campbell Bower’s Celeborn will cross paths with Charlie Vickers’ Sauron, or if Galadriel, Sauron, and Celeborn will share a scene. But it feels like a safe bet that if they do, sparks will fly.
