MALIGNANT Trailer Shows James Wan’s Return to Original Horror

Director and creator of The Conjuring universe James Wan has a new film on the way. And Warner Bros. just released the trailer for his upcoming return to original horror, Malignant. The trailer plays on your imagination, inviting you into the creepy world Wan created. Watch below:

Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis as Madison, a woman paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders. As her distress worsens, she discovers that these waking dreams are, in fact, terrifying realities stemming from her own childhood. Finally, she discovers a secret from her past: an imaginary friend that has haunted her since childhood is back. The trailer reveals that his name is “Gabriel.” He had an attachment to Madison, even before she could remember. Unfortunately, it appears that Gabriel may have affected her life in more ways than she truly knows. She may have escaped him for a while, but no longer. And it doesn’t look like he’ll be letting go this time.

Speaking to IGN, Wan stated that much of the story is secret. That even includes the meaning of the film title. Not going into details, Wan explained that he is a “big fan of titles that have multiple meanings to it.”

Wan continued, “With Saw, we felt there’s one part of that that obviously refers to the visceral aspect of a tool, but at the same time, it touched a bit on what the voyeuristic aspect of the film was as well. And so with Malignant, I just felt like this title really encompasses the tone of the film, the subject matter, which actually has a fair bit of medical horror attached to it. So it just felt appropriate.”

Wan not only directs, but he co-wrote the script alongside Akela Cooper. It’s based on a story they crafted with Ingrid Bisu. Cooper also co-wrote the upcoming The Nun 2, while Bisu previously co-starred in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun.

Malignant will arrive to in theaters and HBO Max on September 10, 2021.
