Creature Commandos will kick off James Gunn and Peter Safran’s all-new DCU. However, the new superhero cinematic universe won’t be entirely new. With so many actors reprising their old roles under the new regime, some aspects of the previous DCEU will still be canon in the relaunched franchise. The question is how much of what happened before will still be official. When it comes to Peacemaker the answer is a lot. Gunn has clarified that basically everything from season one of Peacemaker is still canon in the DCU, with one big exception. Those surprise Justice League cameos no longer count.
Gunn spoke to IGN about which the events of the DCEU will matter for his DCU. We’ll find out as we watch. For example, when a show like Creature Commandos reference’s shows, movies, or moments from the DCEU—like his movie The Suicide Squad—-that becomes canon for the new cinematic universe.
Pretty simple. Even easier to understand is how that will work for Peacemaker season one. Gunn said, “The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League…which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”
The Justice League showed up at the end of the Max show’s first season. It wasn’t exactly an heroic moment for the group. They arrived after Peacemaker and friends had already saved the world. But that’s not the issue Gunn will have to deal with. His DCU will introduce a new version of the Justice League’s heroes, which won’t include Ezra Miller’s Flash or Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, both of whom appeared on Peacemaker.
Will their disappearance be part of the DCU’s story? Or will it be like they never existed at all? We won’t get all our canon questions answered until the DCU actually gets going.
