Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s Kiss on HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Wasn’t Scripted

House of the Dragon‘s “Smallfolk” saw the bond between Queen Rhaenyra and The White Worm Mysaria grow stronger. Then it became intimate. After their secret plot brought food and good PR to the people of King’s Landing, the two spoke with honesty about their fears and trauma. That led them to embrace and comfort one another, which then led them to share a tender kiss. That moment changed the nature of their relationship in a way neither of them planned. The show didn’t plan for it, either. Star Sonoya Mizuno told The Wrap that big smooch between her and the Queen wasn’t actually in the episode’s script.

Mizuno said the script never said anything about them kissing. It merely said, “There’s just breath between them or something, and then whatever happens is interrupted.” So how did they end up at a place that was instantly consquential? The actress said that she, co-star Emma D’Arcy, and showrunner Ryan Condal spent months having “many conversations” about where the story between the two characters was going. D’Arcy then offered up the idea they simply see where the intimate scene led them naturally.

After Mysaria shared the horrible story about her dad’s abuse and near-death, Mizuno said D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra “felt the instinct to hold her, to comfort her.” What followed was “organic.”

Mizuno described that outcome as feeling “emotionally so right,” but it might not be a good idea for either character. Fans of Westeros know “love is the death of duty” as Maester Aemon told Jon Snow. Rhaenyra has enough on her plate trying to claim the Iron Throne. That includes trying to reel in her rogue husband, Daemon, who was once in a relationship with Mysaria.

Any romance between Rhaenyra and Mysaria will come with massive complications. Like this kiss, you can’t script what a relationship will mean during a game of thrones.
