We’ve seen a lot of very trippy forced perspective digital billboards lately. The ones featuring Darth Vader for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett for his Disney+ series were both super cool. Netflix did the same for Resident Evil recently. And that giant 3D housecat in Tokyo? Amazing and sort of terrifying. Well, now HBO’s House of the Dragon is getting in on the digital billboard craze by bringing a dragon to the Big Apple.
Via CBR, we’ve learned the latest Times Square digital billboard features a dragon from House Targaryen looming over the street and then breathing fire. The billboard cuts to the logo for House of the Dragon, reminding everyone that the world of Game of Thrones is back.
The official House of the Dragon Twitter account uploaded a video of the new billboard on August 12, letting all the realm of Manhattan know that “Dragons have landed in Times Square.” Well, Times Square has seen Godzilla attacks, some epic Spider-Man battles, apocalyptic Will Smith action, and even Jason Voorhees one time. We think it can take on one pesky ol’ dragon. What can’t New Yorkers handle?
The highly anticipated prequel to Game of Thrones arrives three years after the seminal series ended its run. House of the Dragon takes place hundreds of years before those events. It’s based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, which details the history of House Targaryen and their endless bloody infighting. Fire & Blood is one of what is meant to be two detailed histories of House Targaryen spread over two novels. Only one has been published so far. Martin has said he’s not releasing the second volume until he finishes the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 21.
