Seth MacFarlane is a man of spinoffs and endless ideas. After The Cleveland Show and American Dad!, it seems the world of Family Guy was due for another story, and what better character to feature than the beloved diabolical baby Stewie? Now, the Family Guy spinoff series Stewie has its cast of voice actors, and several of them consistent are SNL actors. MacFarlane will be joined by Kenan Thompson and Vanessa Bayer of SNL alongside Mike Henry, Family Guy producer and voice of Cleveland Brown. MacFarlane has always voiced Stewie, and now he will also voice Bean, one of his classmates.
Henry will voice BJ, the son of another character he voice-acted in Family Guy, Bruce. Thompson and Bayer will also voice classmates.
The series was ordered by Fox for two seasons. Kirker Butler, who has worked as a producer for Family Guy, will serve as showrunner.
“After getting the boot from his old preschool, Stewie is forced to enroll in a new one that’s not exactly top-of-the-line… Stewie’s miserable, the other kids are miserable, and even the turtle is miserable…until Stewie begins rolling out his trusty array of devices to take them anywhere in space and time, turning every boring day at school into an insane and surreal adventure.”
In 2005, McFarlane wrote and released a Family Guy movie called Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story. This was the first movie to come from the hit series, and with Stewie being one of the most popular Family Guy characters, it’s not surprising he was the focus. It was rated well among fans. As good as that movie was, though, this series is not just a remake, with an entirely different premise and, I’ll say it, much cleaner-looking art.
Other Family Guy spinoffs have found success, with some even coming to prefer American Dad! to its source material. With this in mind, the Stewie spinoff has the potential to become wildly popular with fans of the original series.
