Doctor Who is in a really weird place right now, to say the least. The BBC is still committed to bringing us more episodes and keeping the long-running sci-fi series going. But, after recently parting ways with Disney and Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor regenerating into some version who looks like an older Rose Tyler, some fans aren’t sure what direction this show is heading. I am certainly one of those fans. We’ve seen Billie Piper return to the series a few times, including a role that’s not Rose Tyler as The Moment. But she’s still known best as the first companion of the show’s modern era. Now, fans think that the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special will be a sequel of sorts to “Journey’s End,” which aired way back in 2008.

First, let’s refresh your memory on what happened before we get into why fans have this theory. This episode was essentially Doctor Who’s Avengers: Endgame, with all of the Tenth Doctor’s companions and friends coming together to defeat Davros and the Daleks. The end of the episode sees Rose Tyler returning back to the parallel Earth where she was previously stuck.
But this time she has the metacrisis Doctor, who looks like the Tenth Doctor and has his memories, to be there with her so she can be in love and happy. The metacrisis Doctor only has one heart, which means they can grow old and die together. However, Rose has been considered a missing person from “regular” Earth… until now.
The official Doctor Who page has a UNIT blog, which recently posted an update from Shirley-Anne Bingham (UNIT’s scientific advisor) about Rose. It marks the 20th anniversary of Rose’s return to Earth after Operation Mannequin in 2006. That’s a callback to the first season of the modern era when Rose jumped in the TARDIS with the Ninth Doctor after helping save everyone from murderous mannequins. She thought she was gone for about 12 hours, but it was 12 months.
But, it’s the ending of that message that makes fans think that the new Doctor Who Christmas special will follow up on “Journey’s End.” It says the following:
As Rose Tyler is currently both missing from this universe and flagged as a complex space-time event, maybe keep an eye out. I’ve got the Vlinx scanning all media channels and the subwave network.
Perhaps that version of The Doctor that looks like Rose is up to some shenanigans for a while. And maybe we will get some sort of update on what’s going on with Rose nearly two decades after landing on parallel Earth with the metacrisis Doctor. And funnily enough, there’s the Fourteenth Doctor who is living on Earth and looks an awful lot like Ten.
Could this be a strange pseudo-reunion of sorts? Maybe. The show has obviously been tugging at nostalgia strings lately. We will have to see what happens when the Christmas special airs.
