It’s a great time to be a fantasy comic book fan. There is an embarrassment of riches on the shelves and, from the looks of the preview below, there’s one more title we’ll be adding to our pull lists: The Last God from DC Comics’ Black Label imprint. This thing looks like a brutal mashup of the high adventure of Lord of the Rings and the brutal bleakness of Conan the Barbarian, which is more than enough to get us seriously fired up.

Writer Philip Kennedy Johnson, artist Riccardo Federici, and colorists Sunny Gho and Dean White are doing some epic, dark work on this comic. “The fantasy genre is an insane playground with no rules… you can ride a crazy idea as far as your imagination will take you, which makes it perfect for horror,” Johnson said of the book. “But despite that, truly all-in horror/high fantasy mash-ups are rare, and I don’t think I’m the only one who wants one. In every fantasy series I ever read, the scary parts were always the most fun, and I always wanted to see more.”

The series tells the tale of two groups of heroes battling the same threat 30 years apart. When the last living god is killed in order to save the world of Cain Anuun from a certain apocalypse, it seems that an era of unparalleled peace is born. But, lies and deception lead to lingering darkness and all sorts of horrors to come back to the surface. We don’t know too much more than that but one look at the pages below is all we needed to confirm that this comic is extremely our jam. Federici’s art is a little bit Esad Ribic and a little bit Frank Frazetta. It’s highly detailed stuff and every single panel is packed to the brim. Seriously, these pages are stunning.

“The opportunity to bring high fantasy to DC is a huge honor, and one I don’t take lightly,” Johnson said. “The Last God is my chance to bring new fans into the comics community, and maybe even introduce some hardcore comics fans to high fantasy.” The Last God #1 hits comic book stores on October 30th, so check out the preview, get pumped, and go preorder this bad boy.
