For better or worse, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy remains the standard against which all modern superhero movies—at least modern DC movies—are measured.
Some combination of the Nolan team’s artistic prowess and sheer kismet in its coming along at just the right time made this series a one-of-a-kind phenomenon—one that Warner Bros. has spent years trying to recreate until only recently opting to explore a very different creative direction with the likes of Aquaman and Shazam. But if you’re still looking to relive the Nolan era’s dire sincerity on the big screen once more, there is a way to do it.
And that way: by seeing the Dark Knight movies in theaters again. Warner Bros. has announced that the trilogy will be the focus of a five-city tour, which will include back-to-back showings of 2005’s Batman Begins, 2008’s The Dark Knight, and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX 70mm. (And if you’re a Nolan devotee, you know how dedicated he is to the superiority of this format for the showcasing of his films, and of films in general.) The Hollywood screening will also host an in-person Q&A with Nolan, taking place between the showings of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Unfortunately, Nolan won’t be showing up in any of the other cities on the tour, but his Los Angeles-based chat will be videotaped and broadcast at the other showings, presumably also between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
