How DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Impacts SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY

Sadly, Spider-Man did not appear in Daredevil: Born Again. This was expected, of course. But the events of that series will have some effect on the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Some effects have even been spoiled in the Brand New Day trailers, but others are just our own educated guesses. But since both masked vigilantes operate in New York City, there’s no way that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) won’t be dealing with the fallout of Wilson Fisk’s tenure as Mayor of the city. Here’s how we think the tumultuous effects of Born Again will play out in Spider-Man’s next big screen adventure.

Brand New Day’s Mayor Comes From Daredevil: Born Again Cast

At the end of Daredevil: Born Again’s second season, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is forced to give up his position as Mayor of New York, and leaves the country. It seems a rather lenient sentence for someone who murdered his wife’s doctor when he couldn’t save her. However, he’s also a billionaire. So maybe it’s not so far fetched he’d get away with that to a certain extent. In his place, Sheila Rivera, his Chief of Staff, takes over the position of mayor. At least, temporarily. We know this because in one trailer for Brand New Day, we see Rivera, played again by Zabryna Guevara, handing Spidey the key to the city. Definitely a huge policy change since Fisk went full anti-vigilante with his task force.

Our guess is that Mayor Rivera will go the complete opposite of Fisk’s term as mayor. This, despite having been part of his cabinet. Part of that will be to embrace the masked heroes like Spider-Man as good for the community. Maybe we’ll get some answers as to what Spidey was doing while Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and others were fighting the AVTF. They could have all had “off-panel” interactions we didn’t see. We simply can’t imagine Spider-Man abandoning his post during the Fisk mayoral term. So they’re going to have to address it somehow. Even if a large portion of the moviegoing audience never actually watched Daredevil.

Spidey Fights Daredevil Villains the Hand in Brand New Day

Another scene in the Brand New Day trailer has us putting our tin foil hats on in regarding how it all connects to Born Again. We see in the trailers a scene of Spidey fighting off ninjas from the Hand in a prison. Now, the Hand are classic Daredevil adversaries, not Spider-Man ones. And they were his primary opponents in season two of the Netflix series. With Matt Murdock’s identity exposed, and him serving time in prison, could the Hand seek revenge and go after him there? And might Spidey go to lend a hand to help save his former lawyer? We could definitely see that happening. Yes, Charlie Cox denies being in Brand New Day, but we’re not buying it.

The Punisher Connects Peter Parker and Matt Murdock

Of course, Jon Bernthal as the Punisher does have a confirmed role in Brand New Day, and his character has a big Daredevil connection, even if he wasn’t in Born Again season two. Spider-Man calls him “Frank” in the trailer, suggesting some kind of familiarity between them. Maybe their interactions in the film will go some ways toward explaining what the heck Spidey was doing during Mayor Fisk’s destructive term. And maybe Frank Castle helped Spider-Man deal with the Fisk fallout. We’ll have to see how strong all these connections are when Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31.
