I must admit, Caleb is MY favorite character from The Mighty Nein, so I may be extra biased in my excitement. And seeing him on adventures with Beau, as they tackle the scars of their past as “Empire Kids”—each of them having grown up as loyal to the evil state. In Critical Role: The Mighty Nein–Children of Empire, Caleb and Beau must “return to the empire they once called home.” While others in their party, like Jester and Fjord, are living a romantic happily ever after and finding peace, and still others have set off on their own solitary paths, it’s still all business for Caleb and Beau in this Critical Role: The Mighty Nein sequel novel. They have one task in mind: take down the Cerberus Assembly once and for all.

The synopsis of Critical Role: The Mighty Nein–Children of Empire shares, “

The adventures of the Mighty Nein have ended.

With the Cloven Crystals hidden and Uk’otoa once again imprisoned, all that’s left for the Mighty Nein is to settle back into their well-earned retirements. For some, this means peace and solitude; for others, a recommitment to unmitigated chaos. And for Caleb Widogast and Beauregard Lionett, it marks a return to the empire they once called home.

But ancient, arcane threats still fester in Wildemount: the Cerberus Assembly and its only living founder, the calculating and secretive Ludinus Da’leth. When an old friend offers Caleb a chance to investigate Ludinus, he can’t help but take it, even if it means betraying those he once held dear. And as Beau struggles to settle into domesticity, a good infiltration is the perfect distraction.

The Cerberus Assembly is unlike any foe the Empire Kids have faced before, rooted into the history of their homeland. It’s not an evil that can be pummeled into submission—but that doesn’t mean they can’t try.

Well, we know we can’t wait. Aside from telling a new story about Caleb and Beau, this sequel novel ties together the stories of Critical Role Campaign 2 and 3… “complete with intrigue, machinations, and the occasional fist fight.” If you’d like, you can kick off your rewatch of campaign two right now. We’ll wait three hours for you to finish this piece.

All that said, we hope maybe there’s a little bit of romance in there as well? And yes! Hugo, Nebula, and Ignyte Award-nominated author Nibedita Sen shares on Bluesky, “It has fistfights and smooching and disaster gays and dark academia and spooky archeology and political intrigue, and I am terrified and excited for you all to read it!!” Hot angsty drow, Essek, we’re looking at you! Come and kiss your man in his novel. Yasha and Beau, we are ALSO looking at you. We expect lots of queer smooching, and we are excited.

“When an old friend offers Caleb a chance to investigate Ludinus,” is also a line that caught our eye. Who might we see cameo in this Critical Role novel? The options are endless. We’re also very amused by “as Beau struggles to settle into domesticity.” That’s a mood, Beau.

All will be revealed, and new journeys uncovered, when this The Mighty Nein sequel novel, Critical Role: The Mighty Nein–Children of Empire, releases on November 10, 2026. Pre-order it today.
