Update, 02/07/20: In an interview with Page Six, Jennifer Tilly announced that she would be joining the show! “I’m so excited, “Chucky is very near and dear to my heart. All over the world, everywhere I go, I step off a plane to a country I didn’t even know existed, and they know one word, and that word is ‘Chucky,’ and they want a hug.” Tilly shared, before teasing that she would be joining the newest iteration of the iconic franchise, “a little bird told me that I am going to be a part of it.” Though details are still unclear, we’re hoping that Tilly will be reprising her iconic role as Tiffany Valentine, Charles Lee Ray’s lover and sometimes evil doll.
After a lackluster response to the strange saga of MGM’s bungled Child’s Play reboot, it looks like the original franchise creators Don Mancini and David Kirschner will have the last laugh as their sequel series has been picked up at SYFY The big news about Chucky’s first foray into television was revealed during the Winter 2020 TCA Press Tour and we couldn’t be more excited.
The official synopsis for the new installment into the classic horror franchise was revealed in an official press release from SYFY “A vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies—and allies—from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.” Sounds like it’ll be another addition to the sprawling Chucky canon that will feature some classic characters as well as expanding on the mythos of the cult character and his mysterious origins, which sounds absolutely brilliant.
The long-running franchise has seen seven movies, not to mention controversial remake that saw MGM use their original distribution rights for the first movie to remake it without the okay of the original creative team—who are still making Chucky sequels to this day. It’s this rare feat that keeps the real Child’s Play saga so exciting, in a world of constant remakes and reboots, Mancini has helmed a decades long single continuity horror series that is beloved by fans that still scares and delights in equal measure! We can’t wait to see how the series extends the lore and story centered around the cast of characters, especially after the shocking ending of the last movie, Cult of Chucky!
Chucky lovers are already rejoicing about the news that Mancini will be returning to the franchise he has been helming successfully since Child’s Play 2 in 1990. It’s clearly a decision that the network are just as excited about! Their enthusiasm was showcased in a statement by Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks at USA & SYFY which said, “The character Don and David created has terrified audiences for over 30 years. The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years, we are excited to once again partner with Nick and UCP on this new SYFY series, and are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to television for the first time with the original creators.”
So far there are no details on release date, cast, or production yet but we will be keeping a very close eye on this project because not only do we need more horror series in our lives but we’re also die hard Chucky fans who were less than enamored by the recent attempt to erase his and Don Mancini’s legacy!! (Fake) CHUCKY IS DEAD !!! LONG LIVE (the real) CHUCKY!!!
