Charlie’s Angels is a tale as old as time. The crime-fighting story was born as a television show in 1976, starring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith as the original angels. The trio of female detectives went on to do a few movies next. Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu took over as the crime-fighting fatales. Sony is reviving the femme fatale-led franchise with a new movie penned by The Proposal and Crazy Rich Asians writer Pete Chiarelli.

The news came a few days ago. It hasn’t been confirmed exactly who will produce the revival, but rumors speculate that Drew Barrymore and her Flower Films banner will take the project under its wing. The production company is responsible for both Charlie’s Angels (2000) and its sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003). Chiarelli’s reboot is still in early development.
The original Charlie’s Angels series ran from 1976 to 1981. The pop culture phenomenon follows three female private investigators who take down bad guys across the world, reporting back to an unseen “Charlie.” The show was a massive hit, spawning three movies and a reboot series in 2011 that only ran for seven episodes.
Who will be in the new Charlie’s Angels reboot?

Because the film is still so early in development, it’s hard to say who will portray our iconic angels. There’s also a possibility that the reboot may see the return of past stars. In a 2024 interview, Liu responds to a question about a revival by saying, “I don’t hear much of anything until it actually happens. I’m never going to say no to that. But I would be surprised to hear anything that gets done or undone. You just never know until it happens.”
Pete Chiarelli tackles the script. His previous credits include The Proposal, Crazy Rich Asians, and Now You See Me 2. We’ll let you know more about the revival as news comes.
