Even for those of you who aren't necessarily fans of musicals in a general sense, Cats is one of those shows—like Hamilton or Wicked—you no doubt know a few songs from by now.
Andrew Lloyd Weber's Cats is one of the most successful Broadway musicals ever and has been begging ftor a film adaptation for years now. (Well technically, a film was released in 1998, but that was more of a representation of the Broadway show and less of a film adaptation.) The good news is that a Cats movie is actually happening, and it's led by a fascinating cast (via Variety).
So far, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, and James Corden have been cast; Hudson will play former "glamour cat" Grizabella while the roles of the rest of the cast haven't been announced yet. What we do know is that a couple of the film's stars are very famously connected to cats. Swift has long shown an intense love for cats, particularly her own: Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey, both of whom are such a big part of Swift's life that they're well-known among fans, and they can even be seen in Deadpool 2.
Meanwhile, this won't exactly be Corden's first Cats adaptation: Just last month, when Corden brought The Late Late Show to London, he did a "Crosswalk: The Musical" segment that featured him performing Andrew Lloyd Webber classics in the street. Of course, that included Cats. And as for Ian McKellen, we trust him with nearly any fantastical adventure.
The film will be directed by Tom Hooper, who brought Les Misérables to the screen in 2012, and who has also directed The King's Speech and The Danish Girl.
