Mike Flanagan is bringing his unique horror flair to a classic Stephen King story with Carrie, a Prime Video series. We all know the basics of her story and how it comes to a fiery ending, and we will certainly get those same elements here. But, a series allows time to really flesh Carrie out as a person and put a modern lens on the bullying and social issues that she faces. The trailer for Carrie is here and it is only a reminder that our girl is not evil nor a villain.
Now, that’s not to say that we condone killing a bunch of people. But we cannot necessarily be mad at Carrie’s frustration leading to flames. In the Carrie trailer, we see her entering into the vicious hallways of a high school for her first day of school ever. She seems excited and curious, and even attends a party, saying she dreamed of having friends and just being a normal kid.
However, things get dark in a voiceover as she questions if information about the world and life was being withheld from her. She’s speaking to her overprotective mother, who is a religious zealot that kept her away from general society. Things begin to spiral out of control as Carrie’s anger at her mean peers and her mother come to a head, and her telekinetic powers grow stronger.
Mike Flanagan’s Carrie series is a great way to introduce this classic story to a new generation. It’s been over ten years since the last film adaptation of Carrie, and that one wasn’t great, to say the least. We trust in Flanagan to bring something different to this series and, based on the trailer, the lead actress Summer H. Howell is pretty darn good at portraying Carrie.
Carrie will premiere on Prime Video on October 7, just in time to get yourself ready for Nerdoween. In the meantime, you can read (or re-read) the original Stephen King Carrie novel and see how the story changes in this series.
