No matter where you go, you can’t escape the incessant dings, pings, and bings of cellphones alerting their users to new emails, text messages, and social media interactions. It’s enough to drive anyone insane, which is why we’re already terrified for how close to home season five of Black Mirror is going to be. The new trailer for the show’s return features a man driven to the edge by technology’s loud, ubiquitous noise; the season will tell three new stories and star Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Topher Grace, and Andrew Scott.
The popular BBC anthology series returns to Netflix on June 5. It’s the show first full season since 2017, and the first since the special “choose-your-own-adventure” special Bandersnatch was released in December 2018. In addition to the big names joining the show this season, this first trailer promises to explore the dangers of turning to a machine when you feel isolated from others, the allure of online dating and how it can destroy your family, and the perils of fame in an ever-connected world. Also we’re going to see what it’s like to actually experience being a combatant in a Mortal Kombat-style game, which we’re going to guess is not nearly as much fun as we’d think.
As if this moody, unsettling trailer weren’t good enough, it’s nice to see Black Mirror take our advice to put Aquaman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen in everything. The only downside is that this season will only tell three stories, like it did in its first two seasons. We were hoping to get six like we did in seasons three and four. But maybe we should be careful about rooting for more opportunities to hunker down with our fancy TVs and streaming sites so we can escape our own world. That could be dangerous too. We should know. We do watch Black Mirror.
