DC Comics and The CW have found their Batwoman. Ruby Rose will take up the cape and cowl this winter in The CW’s major Arrowverse crossover event, and possibly in the starring role of a Batwoman series that’s currently in development for the network.
Rose is no stranger to action-packed drama, from an unforgettable role in John Wick Chapter 2 to this summer’s The Meg. She’ll be playing Kate Kane, a Gothamite “with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind,” describes DC Comics. Kane is an out lesbian, as is Rose openly queer; it was important for The CW to cast an openly gay actor, says The Hollywood Reporter. (The CW also recently cast a transgender activist and actress, Nicole Maines, to play the first transgender superhero seen on a screen this fall on Supergirl.)
At San Diego Comic-Con, The CW debuted a trailer that not only shows how far its heroes and villains have come, but also teases Batwoman’s appearance in this winter’s super crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow.
Kate Kane is the member of the Bat-Family the most similar to Bruce Wayne, battling inner demons along with the criminals on the street to fight for justice. Whether there’s a Batman on the streets of her Gotham City remains to be seen, but she’ll likely find a kindred spirit in Arrow’s Oliver Queen.
