Fans complain a lot about how there are “no original ideas” in Hollywood anymore, but that doesn’t mean every reboot is a bad idea. A select few ideas are always perfect to revisit because their tales are timeless. And nothing is more eternal than a bunch of kids sitting around a campfire trying to scare the crap out of each other with horror stories. That’s why no one is upset Nickelodeon is bringing back their beloved ’90s series Are You Afraid of the Dark?, which just shared its first teaser. It promises to frighten a whole new generation of kids, along with all of the adults who are going to watch it too.
Nickelodeon shared this brief promo (which we first saw at io9), which honestly looks even creepier than we would have hoped for. It features flashes of future stories we’ll see on the relaunched series. Included among the bunch are images of a haunting clown sculpture surrounded by people holding clown masks, a man who looks like the Mad Hatter, another man in chilling makeup screaming, and a terrifying ghoul who seems to be attacking a young boy in a boat.
However, the most unsettling image of all comes from the members of the Midnight Society themselves. Not content to merely sit in isolated woods scaring each other with ghost stories, they have decided to up the horror ante by sitting there while wearing terrifying masks.
And just like the premise of the show itself, it doesn’t matter what year it is or what’s going on in the world, a bunch of creepy kids in masks will always scare us. No matter how old we are.
The all-new Are you Afraid of the Dark? comes to Nickelodeon the only month is should: this October, just in time for Halloween.
