As if they really need our approval. Nickelodeon has just released (via IGN) the first full trailer for their limited reboot series Are You Afraid of the Dark?. And here’s the thing, people; it looks really good. The original series, which premiered in 1990, had a small Canadian budget to work with and still became a mega hit. This new revival, though, while only three hour-long episodes, has a cinematic quality the ’90s only wished it could muster. Have a look at the trailer below!
The reboot brings back the Midnight Society, the intrepid gang of kids who traverse a spooky forest to tell each other scary stories. This new Society consists of brand new characters, but with one familiar face – It co-star Jeremy Ray Taylor! (He played young Ben.) In this, one of the kids tells “The Tale of the Carnival of Doom,” but it looks like it’s the Midnight Society themselves who partake in the scares. That’s what we call a table turn. Creepy carnivals and scary circus stuff is a hallmark of the series; the show’s second episode was “The Tale of Laughing in the Dark,” which I’m sure caused a generation of kids to develop Coulrophobia.
Are You Afraid of the Dark? has always been aimed squarely at kids, so don’t expect any truly horrific happenings. It’s still on Nickelodeon, after all. But the original series had its fair share of scary episodes along with a collection of silly ones. That’s part and parcel to the fun! Now all we need is for the kids to have thinly veiled Toronto accents and we’ll be good to go.
Nickelodeon’s three-episode Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot premieres Friday, October 11 at 7pm ET/PT. The next two episodes will air on October 18 and 25 at the same time. The approval is submitted.
