When you wish upon a star, it makes no difference who you are. If you want to sell movie tickets, though, you’re better off having a plan than making a wish. And casting a super famous actor as your lead is never a bad plan. Sometimes that person really can make all the difference. Which is why Disney and director Robert Zemeckis tapped Tom Hanks to play Geppetto in the upcoming live-action remake of the 1940 classic Pinocchio. But he’s not the only Hollywood legend the film will feature. The movie’s teaser trailer also introduces Jiminy Cricket, whose here to help make sure one very magical dream is a dream come true.
Now that is pure, uncut Disney. The only way this trailer could possibly deliver more of that Mouse House magic is if you watched it from atop Cinderella’s Castle while Mickey Mouse served you a pineapple Dole Whip.
This trailer is light on its titular character, though. We’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see what it’s like when a wooden puppet becomes a real boy. When Pinocchio comes to life he’ll be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. And, when the movie’s other major character gets a chance to actually talk, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will voice Jiminy Cricket.
The film also stars Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy. Keegan-Michael Key plays “Honest” John. Lorraine Bracco joins them as Sofia the Seagull. Luke Evans, the live-action Beauty and the Beast MVP, is along for the fun as an entirely new character known as The Coachman. Kyanne Lamaya plays both Fabiana and her marionette Sabina. Giuseppe Battiston stars as Señor Stromboli. And Lewin Lloyd is Lampwick.
Pinocchio will debut at Disney+ on September 8 to celebrate Disney+ Day. You can wish upon a star to see the movie earlier, though. We can’t guarantee your dream will come true, but it’s worth a shot whether you’re a big time Hollywood star or not.
