If your life needs a little whimsy, Z2 Comics has conjured just the story for you. They’re publishing the debut graphic novel from Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire (Stevie Budd on the comedy): Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch. Hampshire wrote the story with Eliot Rahal; it features art by Kristen Gudsnuk and Ames Liu. The graphic novel focuses on Amelia, a millennial homebody who’s not quite ready to live up to the demands of her famous family of LA witches.
This story sounds quite relatable. And if the interior art is anything like the covers, we expect a lot of adorableness. Here’s the synopsis:
While Amelia’s sisters have all followed in the footsteps of her prominent parents, everything she does is just a little…off-brand. A late bloomer who has yet to find her calling, Amelia uses her powers for mostly mundane things, but even those lead to magical misfires, e.g. the unfashionable witch’s hat that’s permanently stuck to her head.As her family’s fame continues to rise, they have no choice but to exclude their bumbling black sheep daughter from the next great chapter of the Aierwoods—reality TV! With the help of her adopted brother Spaghetti—who she accidentally turned into a yeti… long story—Amelia must carve her own path outside of her family’s influence.
Look, it’s never the best thing when an object gets permanently attached to any part of your body. But at least Amelia never has to worry about bad hair days? Still, we do get to see her sans witch hat. We’re exclusively revealing Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch‘s deluxe cover below. Caitlin Rose Boyle illustrated this one, and I have to say it looks like a perfect night in.
Hampshire says in a statement, “Channeling my inner low-key witch into Amelia Aierwood has been a pure joy. Creating a book like this was a dream I didn’t know I had. The talent of the people I’m working with transcended my expectations.”
