It’s a lot of fun, as fans of Star Wars, to piece together bits of the timeline though context clues. We knew, for a long time before we saw it, that Obi-Wan Kenobi fought in something called “the Clone Wars.” It took even longer to see the operation that led to Princess Leia obtaining the Death Star plans. These aren’t necessary pieces of the puzzle that need exploring (let’s just ignore where Han Solo got his name) but they are fun to think about. But one gap in the timeline fans have long wanted to see is what happened to Obi-Wan Kenobi between his exile at the end of Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope. Now thanks to a new sizzle reel for Disney+‘s upcoming series, we have a bit more to go on.
Watch the 76-second reel on Disney+ here.
In the brief piece, we see Ewan McGregor and director Deborah Chow discussing Kenobi’s journey in the upcoming six-episode show. This journey will, inevitably, take him away from his post overseeing a young Luke Skywalker. Concept art shows the Empire’s Jedi Hunters accompanying stormtroopers, as well as what looks to be Coruscant, and possibly other planets too.
But what everybody is waiting for (including McGregor himself) is the return of Hayden Christensen as Dark Vader. We see an ever so brief bit of Christensen training with a lightsaber prop and wearing a breathing mask. One of the few times the pandemic will have helped for something. We also get an amazing piece of concept art showing another lightsaber showdown between Obi-Wan and Vader.
This is huge because, as far as we ever knew, the duel in A New Hope was the first time they’d seen each other since Mustafar. Not so! And if the laser swords blaze, it’s bound to get nice and hairy for our favorite Jedi in hiding.
Surprisingly there’s a lot to go on in this very small clip, but all it does is make us that more excited to finally see Obi-Wan Kenobi when it airs in 2022 on Disney+.
