Movie-going has taken a pretty huge hit this year amid COVID-19. While most of us still have the entire internet’s worth of movies at our beck and call at home, even the best TV and surround system can’t quite live up to the communal aspect of going to the cinema and watching that massive screen. Film festivals of all sorts have taken their wares to an online, on-demand format. There’s still an everyone-at-once aspect, but still at home. And these are great, and have given us some of the year’s most interesting movies. But for L.A.’s premier genre film festival, Beyond Fest, the community is the festival.
Usually Beyond Fest along with partners the American Cinematheque take over the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for a fortnight of programming (I basically lived at the Egyptian last year); this year, however, they can’t really do that. But they have announced they’ll take over the Mission Tiki Drive-In in Montclair, CA for a week of double- and triple-features with a mix of premieres and repertory screenings. From October 2-8, the first physical genre festival of the year will commence.

The Mission Tiki Drive-In has been Beyond Fest’s theater of residence this summer for their weekly double feature series. The lineup for the F**k COVID Edition of Beyond Fest features a mix of world and coastal premieres and repertory favorites. One night even has a trio of David Lynch movies!
