If someone had asked me when I was a kid, “which song from the ’80s would you guess might still be accosting you on the regular thirty years later?” the odds would not have been on pop singer Rick Astley’s hit single “Never Gonna Give You Up.” But then “Rick Rolling” became a thing, and now it’s with us forever. It’s never going to give us up, one might say.
Via Geeks Are Sexy, we’ve now learned about one fan who has found a new way of continuing the Rick Roll legacy, with a LEGO-inspired animated recreation of the “Never Gonna Give You Up” music video. Now, instead of “Rick Rolling” someone, you can actually now “Brick Roll” them, thanks to YouTuber Domy13. You can check out their LEGO-fied music video down below:
This is Domy13’s first animation video, and we have to say, we are impressed. Domy13 managed to include all the weird oddball bits from the original music video, like the random dancers and the bartender. Even though ’80s music videos could be random as all get out (see: Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” if you don’t believe me), Astley’s video was definitely up there when it came to all those odd cutaways. To show just how accurate their video is to the real thing, Domy13 has posted a side-by-side video with the original Rick Astley version.
Now that they’ve made this, we wouldn’t mind seeing some other classic music videos from the MTV era get a LEGO-style makeover. Dire Strait’s “Money for Nothing” seems especially easy to do. I think the Holy Trinity of Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince need some love, too. But I issue an ’80s music video challenge to Domy13. If you can recreate a-ha’s “Take on Me” in LEGO brick style, you will be the champion of champions. I would be very here for that.
