UPDATE 8/24/19 – It was confirmed that Harington will play Dane Whitman, a.k.a. Black Knight in The Eternals. He’ll join his Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden in the film, due out November 6, 2020.
It was only a matter of time before Game of Thrones cast members started landing major projects. Emilia Clarke is off starring in an Emma Thompson Christmas movie, Richard Madden is off to Marvel for The Eternals, and now it looks like his pesky brother Jon Snow is following him. According to Deadline, Kit Harington has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an undisclosed role.
The report comes ahead of the major panels at this weekend’s D23 expo, where a slew of Disney-related news is expected to drop. It’s unclear if Harington will star in one of Marvel’s many upcoming Disney+ TV series–which is, after all, part of the Cinematic Universe–or if he’ll star in a big screen adventure. There are all sorts of possibilities. He could be joining a pre-existing MCU property like Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Thor, or Doctor Strange, maybe as a new hero or villain. He could be stepping into one of the already announced Disney+ shows like WandaVision or Loki. But it’s just as likely that he’ll slip into one of Disney’s new Fox-acquired properties, like X-Men or Fantastic Four. Will he play a major character like Wolverine? Johnny Storm? Mr. Fantastic?
It’s honestly too early to speculate with much authority. That said, we’re almost definitely in for an update on this information at D23, with Marvel head Kevin Feige sure to deliver the news at either Friday’s Disney+ panel or Saturday’s Disney Studios panel. We’ll keep you posted with updates as they become available.
Until then, it’s fun to think about where we see Jon Snow fitting into this universe. It’s also a big get for Harington, who is currently enjoying an Emmy nomination for his role on Game of Thrones–his first major award nomination for the series. It’s good to be Kit Harington.
