Could A New MATRIX Film Be On the Way? (Rumor)

Consider this a grade-A rumor for now, but could we soon return to the dystopian world of The Matrix? 2019 marks 20 years since the first film came out and blew everyone’s minds, and became a sci-fi classic. And although there have been rumors about a return to the virtual world created in that film for a couple of years now, we are now hearing something a little more concrete.

In an interview with Yahoo, (via The Verge), John Wick: Chapter 3 director Chad Stahelski says the Wachowski siblings are working on a new chapter to the series, which had its last installment in 2003 with The Matrix Revolutions. Stahelski  said “I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved, and if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

Since then, Stahelski has put out a correction to this statement via his reps, saying he would do it IF the Wachowskis returned for another sequel. But maybe he’s covering for the fact that he slipped up and mentioned something that Warner Brothers is simply not far enough along to announce yet? Thanks to John Wick, Keanu Reeves is an action star once more, and it could be the studio has taken notice and wants to see the return of Neo.

Despite the first film’s iconic status, it will be interesting to see if the same kind of excitement will happen for the world of The Matrix again. The biggest problem is that the first two sequels were very divisive when they came out, and don’t have nearly the same amount of fan love the first film did. If any franchise has at least one stellar second installment (see: Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, Alien, etc.) fans will always have some optimism, because they’ve seen lightning can strike twice. But if both sequels of the original series left fans wanting, could a 20-years-later part 4 get people excited? If this rumor is true, then the Wachowskis have their work cut out for them.
