Steve McQueen’s WIDOWS Promises the Female Fronted Heist Movie We Need

Oscar winning director and auteur Steve McQueen has built a career on his incredible, moving, and complex films like 12 Years A Slave, Shame, and Hunger. His arthouse sensibilities and unique vision will soon be bringing us something completely different, as the radical trailer for his new film Widows, written by Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn, shows.

Widows stars Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Debicki, and Michelle Rodriguez as the widowed wives of a group of criminals who are left in danger and debt after the deaths of their husbands. But they will not go quietly into the dark night, and decide to take their husbands places, depending on the fact that the people around them will never even suspect their plan.

It’s an action packed trailer that promises a subversion on the usual heist movie setup. And it’s not only the central cast that’s stellar, but the supporting cast includes Get Out‘s Oscar nominated Daniel Kaluuya, Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, as well as Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, and loads more fantastic talent. Fans of Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn know she loves bleak female-centered tales that often have a brutal twist, so we’re sure Widows will be a wild ride.

Are you excited to see McQueen and Flynn team up for the darkly delightful Widows? Can’t wait to see Viola Davis showing off her action chops? Just want to watch a bunch of women kick some criminal butt and get their dues? Let us know in the comments!
