A long time ago in a galaxy far, far closer than you’d expect, Respawn Entertainment revealed in May 2016Opens in a new tab they were making a new “third person action/adventure game set in the Star WarsOpens in a new tab universe,” and the Internet was ablaze with speculation like so many Anakins failing to secure so many high grounds. On Saturday, Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella made a surprise announcement at Electronic Arts’ EA Play press conference at E3 that the game is no longer shrouded in mystery, but rather it has a release date, a title, and a definitive time period. The previously untitled game is officially dubbed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and will hit store shelves during the holiday 2019 season.
Zampella revealed that players will take on the role of a Jedi during the “dark times,” which he went on to clarify is between “Episode III and Episode IV.” This puts the game squarely in the period of time covered by shows like Star Wars RebelsOpens in a new tab, as well as movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Given the aftermath of Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66, which authorized the systematic execution and mass murder of all Jedi, the game will presumably put you in the robes of a Jedi on the run, marked for death by a totalitarian superpower and forced to lurk in the shadows to escape extinction. There is no word yet on who players will be controlling in the game, but fingers crossed we’ll see some familiar faces like Obi-Wan Kenobi (mainly so we can get a Ewan McGregor voice cameo). Best of all, this sounds like a return to form for gamers yearning for a return to the days of games like Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, and Jedi Academy.
